Gosh, Abby! I always figured a guy also, but quite a bit older than the beautiful Desmond Ragwort (that one I have no difficulty imagining!) and bespectacled. Repressed, yes. But is he enough fun to be anyone’s best friend?

I’m sure Hilary is a man. I imagine a slight , 5’7″, tow-haired lean build. Rumpled but Eton-esque in khakis or seersucker pants. Bangs a little shaggy. Scuffed loafers, never sneakers, antique watch. Accent not too high-tone. Cute enough that he’s both a babe-magnet and a boy-toy, but non-threatening sexually because he is a slightly repressed. Secretly in love with his first cousin, but unrequited. Could be gay or straight, it’s irrelevant. A perfect best friend. Almost, but not quite, a P.D. Wodehouse creation….
